CHAPTER 7

Marcus dropped Charli off at the Jackson Construction office a little before noon, and then headed over to the B&B hoping to catch Frank and Silas mid-checker game. Charli wasn’t too sure what she was going to find going through her grandfather’s papers, but she was going to give it a good go if it meant possibly finding a person of interest who might wish to do the Jackson family harm.

Her body was still humming from making love with Marcus, not once but twice before falling asleep in each other’s arms. Then when they woke, they’d made love again before showering a second time and finally getting dressed, going down to Gunny’s and having an early lunch.

RJ’s brows had perked up when she saw them come in that late, but she didn’t say a word. Which was good, because frankly, Charli didn’t think it was any of the woman’s business. Neither was it Stone’s, who was all smiles from behind the bar where he was working today. It had irked her that it was like he knew what they’d been doing all morning. Especially after Marcus had finally explained to her about the calling card Trojan packet he’d had in the shower.

They’d had only the one however and that worried her a little even if she’d told him she was on the pill. The condom was added protection from pregnancy which she was no where ready for at the moment. Her life right now was in such a shambles. And she wanted to enjoy her time alone with Marcus for as long as she could.

She turned on the radio and opened up the storage closet where the older files were kept. Unlocking the big, black lateral file where her grandfather’s old files were, she did a deep dive and tried to keep her mind on the job at hand instead of how it had felt to have Marcus touching her. He’d awakened feelings in her that she’d never known existed and she couldn’t wait to be with him again.

The mere thought of him had her turning to warm goo inside again, and she wanted to call him up and tell him to get over here right now. But she didn’t dare. She couldn’t risk putting both their lives at risk by doing something so reckless in town.

Instead, she focused on her task and searched through the records and file folders trying to find anything that stood out to make her believe that there was someone from her grandfather’s business dealings that was behind the attacks on her and Melanie. After two hours of searching, she closed the last file and put it away without any luck.

She’d made note of all the clients on a legal pad and their phone numbers, so she was going to give each a phone call to see if any were still alive and find out if there was any follow up business that needed to be done on the company’s behalf. Good customer service, even years later, couldn’t hurt.
